The VWCDPIC is a "lock pick," if you will, that unlocks the CD Changer
interface by sending the required data stream, fooling the head unit
into thinking a CD Changer is connected. With a VWCDPIC,
you'll be able to listen to any audio player through your stock OEM head
unit. You can often remotely control most MP3 players from the
head unit's buttons as well (PJRC, WinAmp, Archos Jukebox, iPod,
Pocket PC PDA, etc).
Features
- Interfaces with the rectangular CD Changer plug already wired in the trunk of most VW's.
Audi cars use a 13 pin DIN connector that can also be interfaced by making a
different cable. Some Volkswagen models in Europe do not have the trunk
cable pre-wired; you can make an adapter cable to directly attach to the
rear of the head unit instead.
- Provides direct auxiliary input for easily connecting your own audio device (such as an MP3 player). Not FM modulated!
- Fools the stock head unit into thinking a CD Changer is connected,
allowing you to listen to your audio device through your vehicle's built-in
speakers when you select "CD" at the head unit.
- Open source hardware and software design.
- FLASH upgradable firmware without any tools beyond a PC
with a serial port.
- Can be used to remote control a PJRC MP3 Player
or PC using serial data commands. Should even
work with PCs powered by an inverter, if you build the optoisolated control
cable.
- Remote control Pocket PC PDAs when using the third party shareware player
RadioPlayer.
- Remote control Archos Jukebox MP3 players with Rockbox open source firmware.
- Remote control Apple iPod 3rd generation and later MP3 players using
Z-Man's iPod VW interface firmware (iPod-VW).
Caveats
- Low voltage audio players may not produce enough volume to work well
with your head unit. See the FAQ
for more.
- A ground loop isolator may be needed to solve electrical noise issues
if you power your audio player from the car's power system. These can be
purchased from your local electronics store (RadioShack, etc).
